This archive is a collection of fifty garden carpets, gathered primarily from museum collections. Many of them are more than a century old. The word paradise originates from the Avestan term pairi-daēza, meaning “a walled enclosure” or “a garden surrounded by walls.” A carpet can be understood as a kind of portable paradise—an object that carries the image of a garden from one place to another. What kinds of paradise, then, were woven into these carpets?
